The storytelling of scientific images

Talk curated by Mission Manager of the Italian Space Agency’s COSMO-SkyMed Satellite System – May  3 at 11 a.m. @ BLA

For the 2026 edition, the Ennesimo project has once again received the Patronage of ASI, the Italian Space Agency. It is a shared path that continues to emphasize the importance of education in scientific imagery—a journey of discovery that proceeds this year alongside Maria Virelli, Mission Manager of the ASI COSMO-SkyMed Satellite System, who will guide us toward a profound understanding of modern observation technologies.

Satellite technology has made tremendous strides, allowing us to transition from early, historic grainy shots to ultra-high-resolution images reaching up to 10-30 cm per pixel. Today, the true power of satellite imagery lies in its ability to be transformed into dynamic decision-making tools. Through these images, we can obtain a global and continuous view of the planet—a comprehensive perspective that no terrestrial instrument or aerial vehicle can guarantee.

This power is also crucially expressed through the temporal dimension. The vast data archives available today, such as those acquired by the COSMO-SkyMed Constellation or the Copernicus satellites, allow us to compare images from years past with current ones. This “time travel” is essential for accurately monitoring landslides, melting ice, and relentless urban expansion. Today, these technologies do not merely provide us with beautiful “photos from above”; they generate true data streams that enable the analysis of phenomena invisible to the human eye. They help us grasp the profound changes occurring on our planet and, when used correctly, become an indispensable asset for making informed decisions about our future.
